Emotional Support after a Digital Incident

Providing emotional support after an incident

When a child goes through a digital incident, whether cyberbullying, exposure to inappropriate content or contact with an ill-intentioned adult, the responsible adult's initial reaction makes the difference between the child feeling protected or guilty. It's essential to avoid reproach ("why did you do that?") and prioritize emotional support: validating what they feel, making it clear they're not in trouble for telling you, and conveying calm even if you're worried inside. A disproportionate reaction, such as immediately taking away the device as punishment, usually teaches the child that reporting a problem has negative consequences, which makes them less likely to ask for help next time. If the emotional impact persists, seeking professional psychological support is a valid and recommended step.
