Programs Recognizing Secure Behaviors

Recognizing good security habits

Most security programs focus on correcting mistakes, but publicly recognizing good behaviors, such as reporting a phishing email in time or warning about an insecure configuration, reinforces those habits far more effectively than only pointing out failures. A recognition program can be as simple as mentioning the case in an internal communication, or including formal incentives for those who report consistently. HR is in a natural position to lead these initiatives, since it already manages recognition and motivation processes for staff in other areas. The implicit message this kind of program sends is powerful: security isn't just about avoiding sanctions for doing something wrong, but also a behavior the organization actively values and recognizes.
