Collaboration between HR and Security in Insider Incidents
Coordination in insider incidents
When a security incident involves an employee, whether as the victim of a scam or as the possible source of a leak, HR and security must coordinate closely, since handling the case combines technical, legal and human aspects that neither area can resolve alone. Security provides the technical analysis of what happened, while HR provides the employment context and manages the disciplinary or support implications as appropriate. It's important to distinguish between a genuine human error, which deserves additional training and not necessarily a sanction, and a deliberate malicious action, which does require a different response. Defining this joint protocol in advance avoids improvising sensitive decisions under the pressure of an incident already underway.
