Managing Role Changes and Their Access Implications
Adjusting access when roles change
When an employee changes position or area within the same organization, it's common for them to receive the new access their role requires but also keep the old access they should no longer have, creating a silent accumulation of privileges known as "privilege creep". This excess access isn't always used with bad intentions, but it unnecessarily widens the risk surface: the more systems a person can touch, the greater the potential damage if their account is compromised. Coordinating each role change between HR and security, explicitly reviewing and removing access that no longer matches the new position, and not just adding the new access, is a simple but frequently neglected practice in internal mobility processes.
