Assessing and Prioritizing Cyber Risks
How to prioritize risks by their real impact
No organization has unlimited resources to eliminate every possible cyber risk, so assessing and prioritizing them according to their likelihood and the impact they would have on the business is what makes it possible to invest the budget where it really matters, instead of spreading it evenly across problems of very different weight. This exercise requires leadership to take an active part, because only the business can define how serious it would be, for example, to lose access to the billing system for a day compared with losing access to internal email for the same time. A practical approach is to classify risks in a simple impact and likelihood matrix, and then direct resources first to those in the high-impact, high-likelihood zone, leaving low-impact ones for periodic reviews instead of immediate, urgent attention.
