Translating Technical Risks into Business Language
How to explain technical risks in business terms
Translating technical risks into business language is the skill of taking a finding such as "SQL injection vulnerability on the production server" and turning it into something an executive can understand and prioritize, such as "an attacker could access the entire customer database without needing a password". This translation matters because budget and priority decisions are made by people who don't need to master technical jargon, but do need to clearly understand what real consequence ignoring a given risk has for the business. A useful technique is to always connect the technical finding with a measurable impact, such as revenue at risk, affected customers or estimated downtime, instead of stopping at the description of the problem, because numbers and concrete consequences are what really drive action in a decision-making room.
