Communicating Risk to the Business

Reporting Security Metrics to Stakeholders

How to present security metrics clearly

Reporting security metrics to executives or investors requires translating technical data, such as the number of vulnerabilities detected or the average incident response time, into indicators that reflect the business's real risk level and the effectiveness of the investments made in protection. A stakeholder without technical training doesn't need to know how many patches were applied this month, but does care whether the risk of suffering a serious incident went down compared with the previous quarter, and what additional investment would be required to reduce it further. Presenting these metrics with clear visual trends, comparing periods and using risk traffic lights instead of long tables full of technical acronyms, helps keep the conversation focused on business decisions instead of getting lost explaining terminology nobody in the room really masters.
