Business Case for Security Investment
How to justify security investment to the business
Building a business case for security investment means presenting the argument in terms the business understands, comparing the cost of implementing a protection measure with the potential cost of not doing so, including direct financial losses, regulatory fines and the reputational impact of an avoidable incident. This is different from simply asking for budget by saying "it's necessary for security", a phrase that rarely convinces whoever must approve the expense without seeing the return or the risk avoided in concrete terms. An effective approach is to show scenarios with real numbers, for example how much a data leak would cost on average in the company's sector, compared with the annual investment needed to significantly reduce that likelihood, leaving the decision in the business's hands but with all the relevant information on the table.
