Managing Information on Devices and Backups
How to take care of stored data and its copies
Sensitive information doesn't live in just one place; it's scattered across computers, phones, external drives and cloud backups, and each of those copies represents an additional point where that data could leak if not managed carefully. A frequent oversight is backing up sensitive information on personal devices, such as your own USB drive or an unencrypted external disk, forgetting that those copies fall outside the organization's control and security standards. Keeping a simple record of where copies of sensitive data exist, even a mental one, helps you know exactly what to delete when that data is no longer needed, instead of leaving forgotten traces on devices nobody checks again. Encrypting backups and limiting how many copies really exist, instead of multiplying them for convenience with each new project, significantly reduces the total risk surface of the information you handle.
