Physical and Digital Destruction of Information
How to delete documents and files without leaving a trace
When a document or file with sensitive information is no longer needed, simply throwing it in the trash or moving it to the recycle bin doesn't really delete it, because in both cases it remains relatively easy to recover for anyone who knows how to look. Physical documents should go through a shredder or a certified destruction service, instead of ending up whole in a regular trash bin where anyone could reconstruct the information. In the digital world, deleting a file only hides it from the operating system, but the content remains on the disk until it's overwritten, so secure deletion requires specific wiping tools or, for entire devices, encryption enabled from the start that makes the information unrecoverable after a reset. An important nuance is that destruction must also reach backup copies and old versions stored in the cloud, because there's little point in deleting the original file if it still exists intact in a forgotten backup.
