Separating Personal and Work Devices

Why not to mix personal and work devices

Using the same computer to check work email, watch shows and let the kids do their homework seems practical, but it mixes the lowest level of security in the home with the company's most sensitive information. A personal device usually has fewer controls, more apps installed by different family members and greater exposure to risky downloads, which increases the likelihood of malware ending up close to corporate files. When the organization provides a dedicated work device, using it exclusively for that purpose, without installing personal programs or sharing it with other people in the home, keeps that environment more controlled and predictable. If that option doesn't exist and you must use your own computer, at least creating a separate user account just for work, with its own passwords and no shared access, considerably reduces the risk of a personal slip ending up affecting company information.
