Secure Remote Work Fundamentals

The Organization's Remote Work Policies

Rules that define how to work securely remotely

Every organization that allows remote work usually has a set of rules defining which devices you can use, which networks are acceptable, how to access internal systems and what to do in the event of an incident, although many people never read them carefully. These policies don't exist to complicate day-to-day work, but because outside the office the company loses much of the technical control it has over its own network, and needs clear rules to keep information protected no matter where you connect from. Knowing them saves you from awkward situations, such as using an unauthorized tool to share an urgent file and unintentionally causing a security breach. An important nuance is that these policies are usually updated as threats change, so reviewing them from time to time, and not just when you start the job, helps you stay aligned with what the organization expects of you as a remote employee.
