Continuous Supply Chain Risk Monitoring

Watching vendors after hiring them

Assessing a vendor's risk before signing the contract is only the first step, because its security posture can deteriorate over time due to staff changes, reduced security investment or its own incidents that the organization never learns about if there's no continuous monitoring after contracting. This monitoring can combine periodic reassessment questionnaires, external risk ratings based on threat intelligence, monitoring of mentions of the vendor on data leak forums, and contractual clauses requiring security incidents to be reported within a defined time frame. In practice, the extended supply chain is one of the most common blind spots in risk management, because the risk doesn't come only from the direct vendor but also from the subcontractors it uses, and many organizations discover that hidden dependence only after an incident that originated several links further down the chain.
