Third-Party Risk Management

Vendor Cyber Risk Assessment

Measuring the risk a third party introduces

When an organization hires a vendor with access to its systems or data, it inherits part of that third party's cyber risk, so assessing its security posture before contracting is as important as assessing the organization's own internal controls. This assessment usually combines structured self-assessment questionnaires, review of current certifications such as ISO 27001, analysis of risk ratings based on external sources and, in the most critical cases, audits or direct technical testing of the vendor. In practice, the depth of the assessment should be proportional to the risk that specific vendor represents, measuring factors such as the type of data it will access, the level of technical integration with the organization's systems and the operational dependence on the contracted service, instead of applying the same lengthy questionnaire to a low-risk vendor and to one that will process sensitive customer data.
