Third-Party Risk Management

Third-Party Risk Rating Methodologies

Scoring and segmenting vendors by risk

Rating third-party risk consistently requires a structured methodology that assigns a comparable score to each vendor, combining factors such as the type and volume of data it accesses, its level of technical connectivity with internal systems, the criticality of the service it provides for business operations, and the results of its initial and periodic security assessments. This score makes it possible to segment the vendor universe into risk tiers, typically high, medium and low, and adjust the depth of monitoring and the contractual clauses required according to that tier, instead of treating all third parties with the same standard. In practice, a common mistake is to rate the risk only at the time of contracting and never recalculate it when conditions change, for example when a low-risk vendor expands its technical access months later without that change triggering a new formal assessment.
