Requirements Mapping and Management

Mapping Requirements to Internal Controls

Translating the standard into concrete controls

Each requirement of a standard such as ISO 27001, NIST CSF or GDPR is an obligation written in general terms, and mapping it to internal controls is the exercise of translating that obligation into the specific technical controls, processes and policies the organization already has or must implement to satisfy it. This mapping is what makes it possible to demonstrate compliance with concrete evidence instead of generic statements, and it also directly reveals gaps when a requirement has no associated control. In practice, a single control often satisfies several requirements at once; for example, a robust access management process can simultaneously cover requirements from ISO 27001, a sector regulation and a contractual customer, which makes it possible to build a traceability matrix that avoids duplicating efforts when operating under multiple regulatory frameworks at the same time.
