About SPF

What is SPF?

SPF (Sender Policy Framework) is an email authentication protocol that lets domain owners specify which servers are authorized to send email on behalf of their domain.

Common mechanisms

  • all - Matches all IPs (always at the end)
  • include: - Includes another domain's SPF rules
  • a - Authorizes IPs from the domain's A records
  • mx - Authorizes IPs from the domain's MX records
  • ip4/ip6: - Authorizes a specific IP or range

Calificadores

  • + (Pass) - Authorized (default)
  • - (Fail) - Not authorized, reject email
  • ~ (SoftFail) - Not authorized, mark as spam
  • ? (Neutral) - No policy defined

Benefits of SPF:

  • Prevents domain spoofing
  • Improves deliverability of legitimate emails
  • Reduces spam that uses your domain
  • Protects your domain's reputation
  • Required by many email providers

Example SPF record:

v=spf1 include:_spf.google.com ip4:192.168.1.1 ~all

This record authorizes Google Workspace and a specific IP, marking other servers as spam.
