How does TOTP work?

  • TOTP (RFC 6238) combines a shared secret key with the current time to generate a code that changes every few seconds
  • The server and your app compute the same code independently, offline
  • The standard configuration is SHA-1, 6 digits and 30 seconds; change it only if the service says so
  • All calculations happen in your browser: the secret key is never sent to any server
  • The share link stores the key in the URL fragment (#); treat it like a password
