About Hash Functions
What is a hash function?
A cryptographic hash function turns data of any size into a fixed-length string. It is deterministic (same input = same output) and practically irreversible.
MD5
- 128 bits (32 caracteres hex)
- Fast but not secure
- Only for simple checksums
- Vulnerable to collisions
SHA-1
- 160 bits (40 caracteres hex)
- Safer than MD5
- Deprecated for security
- Still used in Git
SHA-256
- 256 bits (64 caracteres hex)
- Current secure standard
- Used in Bitcoin/blockchain
- Collision resistant
SHA-512
- 512 bits (128 caracteres hex)
- Safer than SHA-256
- Better for large data
- Used in SSL/TLS certificates
Common use cases:
- File integrity verification
- Secure password storage
- Unique content identifiers
- Digital signatures and certificates
- Blockchain and cryptocurrencies
Important considerations:
- Hashes are irreversible - you can't get the original text back
- MD5 and SHA-1 must not be used for security-critical applications
- For passwords, use specialized functions like bcrypt or Argon2
- Small changes in the input produce completely different hashes
