About URL Encoding
What is URL Encoding?
URL encoding (also known as percent-encoding) converts special characters in URLs into a format that is safe for web transmission. Characters are represented with % followed by their hexadecimal code.
Common encoded characters:
espacio%20
!%21
#%23
$%24
&%26
+%2B
=%3D
?%3F
Common use cases:
- Query parameters in URLs with spaces or special characters
- Web forms that send data via GET
- REST APIs with parameters in the URL
- Redirects with URLs as parameters
- Dynamic link building
Best practices:
- Always encode URL parameters that contain user data
- Don't encode the whole URL, only the necessary parameters
- Use the language's native functions (encodeURIComponent in JS)
- Decode URLs before showing them to the user for better readability
