About hexadecimal encoding
What is hexadecimal encoding?
It represents each byte of a text (encoded in UTF-8) as two base-16 digits (0-9 and A-F). It is a readable way to inspect or transmit binary data, widely used in programming, network protocols and data analysis.
Common use cases:
- Debugging binary data or network payloads
- Representing colors, hashes or cryptographic keys
- Inspecting the raw content of a file
- Interoperating with systems that expect hex data
Security considerations:
- Hexadecimal is NOT an encryption method, only an encoding
- Hex-encoded data is trivially decoded
- Don't use hexadecimal to hide sensitive information
- For sensitive data, use proper encryption methods
