Confidentiality and Security Clauses in Employment Contracts

Security clauses in contracts

Including explicit confidentiality and acceptable use clauses in the employment contract from day one sets clear expectations and gives the organization legal backing in the event of an employee's misuse of sensitive data. These clauses should specify what is considered confidential information, what protection obligations the employee has during and after employment, and what consequences exist for non-compliance. It's not enough to have them signed as an administrative formality: explaining their content during onboarding, with concrete examples of which behaviors would violate the agreement, considerably increases their practical effectiveness compared with simply handing them over as one more document among dozens of hiring papers.
