The Role of Human Resources in Cybersecurity

The Employee Lifecycle and Its Associated Risks

Risks at each stage of the employee lifecycle

An employee's lifecycle, from hiring to leaving the organization, goes through several moments where security risk concentrates in different ways. During onboarding, the risk lies in granting excessive access from the start, beyond what the role really requires. During employment, the risk appears when access isn't adjusted as the person changes role or project, accumulating unnecessary privileges over time. And at departure, the most critical risk is failing to revoke all access in time, leaving active accounts nobody should be able to use anymore. Seeing security as a continuous process tied to each stage of this cycle, and not as an isolated review, prevents access gaps from silently accumulating over time.
