Vendor Assessment

Vendor Security Assessment Methodology

How to structure vendor assessment

Assessing a vendor's security consistently requires a repeatable methodology, not an ad hoc review that varies depending on who does it, combining standardized questionnaires, review of certifications such as ISO 27001 or SOC 2, analysis of publicly exposed vulnerabilities and, in the most critical cases, penetration tests or on-site audits. The depth of the assessment must be proportional to the vendor's criticality; applying the same level of scrutiny to a catering company as to one with access to core infrastructure wastes resources and also dilutes attention on the real risks. Defining objective approval criteria, instead of subjective case-by-case decisions, makes it possible to scale the program as the number of vendors grows, and to have documented evidence of why each relationship was approved or rejected, which is essential in a later regulatory audit.
