Vendor Assessment

Classifying Vendors by Criticality and Risk

How to classify vendors by risk level

Not all vendors represent the same level of risk, and applying the same assessment process to all of them consumes resources inefficiently while leaving those that can really cause significant impact without the attention they need. Classifying vendors means considering factors such as the type of data they access, whether they have direct connectivity to internal systems, whether their disruption would affect critical business processes, and whether they're easily replaceable or represent a single point of dependency. With this classification, it's possible to assign proportional levels of scrutiny: thorough, frequent assessments for critical vendors and simplified processes for low-risk ones. A common mistake is classifying vendors only by the volume of the business relationship, leaving out of the critical category a small vendor that nonetheless has privileged access to a sensitive system that compromises the whole organization if it fails.
