Third-Party Risk Fundamentals

Types of Third Parties and Their Level of Risk Exposure

How risk varies by type of third party

The term third party covers a wide variety of relationships with very different risk profiles: software vendors that process data directly, cloud infrastructure providers that host critical systems, consultants with temporary access to sensitive information, and general service providers with no connection to the organization's systems. Each type exposes the organization differently: a software vendor with access to the codebase can introduce vulnerabilities directly into the product, while a logistics provider with access only to shipping data represents a much more limited exposure risk. Understanding this variety makes it possible to design differentiated assessment processes instead of a single generic form, and avoids the common mistake of underestimating vendors that, although they seem low-profile because of the type of service they provide, end up having a level of technical access disproportionate to their apparent business relevance.
