Data Protection Regulatory Framework

Main data protection regulations

The data protection regulatory framework, which in practice combines regulations such as the European GDPR, national data protection (habeas data) laws and sector rules, establishes the principles every organization must follow when collecting, storing and processing personal information, including informed consent, data minimization, purpose limitation and people's right to access, rectify or delete their information. Knowing this framework isn't an isolated legal exercise but a practical guide for designing systems: it defines what data can be collected, how long to keep it, and which security measures are required depending on the type of data. Ignoring it exposes the organization to significant financial penalties, but also to something costlier in the long run: the loss of customers' and partners' trust. A frequent example is companies that discover, after an audit or an incident, that they've been retaining personal data for years with no legal basis or defined retention period.
