Classifying Data by Sensitivity and Criticality

How to classify data by sensitivity

Not all data requires the same level of protection, and treating it as if it did spreads security resources over low-risk information while leaving the data that really matters exposed. Classifying data means defining categories, for example public, internal, confidential and restricted, and assigning each piece of data to one of them according to its sensitivity, the impact of an exposure and the applicable regulatory requirements. This classification isn't a one-off exercise; it must be applied consistently across the organization and updated when a piece of data's context changes, such as when previously public information comes to be considered sensitive after a regulatory change. The practical value shows day to day: a clear classification scheme makes it possible to automate controls, apply encryption or access restrictions only where appropriate, and prioritize the response to an incident according to which specific data was involved.
