Bug Bounty Programs and Responsible Disclosure

Rewarding the discovery of flaws

A bug bounty program invites external security researchers to look for vulnerabilities in an application in exchange for a financial reward, leveraging the creativity of a community much broader than any internal team. To work well, it needs clear rules: which systems are in scope, what types of testing are allowed, and a direct communication channel with the security team. Responsible disclosure is the principle that sustains it: the researcher reports the flaw privately and gives the organization time to fix it before making it public, preventing it from being exposed to other attackers in the meantime. Well managed, this type of program complements internal testing with a constant, external source of detection of real vulnerabilities.
