Verifying Identity through Alternative Channels
Verifying identity through another channel
The most reliable way to neutralize a social engineering attempt is simple: if someone requests something unusual or sensitive through one channel (email, chat, a call), verify their identity using a different, previously known channel, never the number or link the suspicious request itself provides. If an email claims to be from the bank, call the official number printed on the card, not the one in the message. If a "boss" asks for an urgent transfer over chat, call the cell phone number you already had saved. This principle, known as out-of-band verification, is so effective because an attacker rarely controls both channels at the same time, so a second independent contact usually exposes the impersonation immediately.
