Building Trust without Excessive Surveillance
Balancing trust and control
Monitoring every message, photo or search a child makes may seem like the safest way to protect them, but it usually has the opposite effect: it pushes them to use hidden accounts, friends' devices or apps adults don't know about, precisely to avoid that control. Supervision is necessary, especially with young children, but it should gradually decrease and turn into support as the child grows and shows their own judgment. Building trust means involving them in decisions about their digital life, explaining the reason for each limit instead of imposing it without context, and recognizing when they act well, not just correcting them when they make mistakes. A teenager who trusts they'll be listened to, and not just punished, comes forward sooner when there's a real problem.
