Third-Party and Vendor Risks
How to manage the risk vendors bring
Every vendor, contractor or business partner with access to an organization's systems or data in practice extends the company's security perimeter beyond its own walls, and many serious incidents happen precisely because a third party with legitimate access was the weak point an attacker chose to exploit. Managing this risk from leadership means requiring real evidence of good security practices before signing contracts, and not just trusting the vendor's reputation or size, because even large, well-known companies have been the origin of major breaches at their customers. A practical example is classifying vendors according to their level of access to sensitive information, and applying stricter security reviews to those with critical access, instead of treating all third parties with the same level of scrutiny regardless of the real risk they represent.
