Incident Response and Business Continuity Plans

How to prepare the business for a serious incident

An incident response plan defines who does what during the first critical hours of an attack, while the business continuity plan ensures essential operations keep running even if some systems go down; both must exist together, because containing an attack technically is of little use if the company can't keep billing or serving customers in the meantime. For a leader, the key question isn't whether the technical team knows what to do, but whether leadership itself knows its role at that moment, whom it must call first and which decisions only it can authorize, such as paying a ransom or disconnecting production systems. Practicing these plans with regular drills, and not just keeping them stored in a document, is what really determines whether they work when a real incident happens under pressure.
