Security Investment Decisions
How to decide what to invest in security
Deciding what to invest in security, with an always limited budget against risks that seem unlimited, requires leadership to understand that it isn't about buying the most advanced tool on the market, but about identifying which investment most effectively reduces the specific risk that particular organization faces. Many investment decisions fail because they're made under outside pressure, after reading about the latest attack in the news, instead of being based on a real assessment of the company's own vulnerabilities. A practical example is that, before approving an expensive advanced threat detection tool, a leader asks whether the organization already has the basics covered, such as applying security updates in time and requiring two-factor authentication, because investing in the advanced without covering the basics is usually money poorly spent.
