Cybersecurity as a Strategic Priority

Leadership's Role in Security Culture

How leadership builds a secure culture

An organization's security culture is rarely built through written policies and mandatory training alone, but through what leadership models day to day, because employees pay close attention to whether executives really follow the same rules they require of others, such as using two-factor authentication or not sharing passwords over chat. When a leader treats security as a genuine priority, asking about it in business meetings and not just in annual technical reports, the rest of the organization understands that it isn't optional or exclusive to an isolated department. A revealing example is when an executive asks for an exception to a security policy "for convenience", because that single gesture can undo months of effort building a culture where everyone, without exception, follows the same basic protection rules.
