Brand Incident Response

Process for Reporting and Taking Down Fake Content

Steps to report and remove fake content online

The reporting and removal process, known as a takedown, is the formal mechanism for asking a platform, domain registrar or search engine to remove content that impersonates or harms the brand, such as a phishing site or a fake profile. Each platform has its own channels and response times, so having report templates prepared in advance, with the necessary evidence such as screenshots and comparisons with the official content, speeds up the process enormously compared to having to put everything together from scratch during an active crisis. In urgent cases, such as an active phishing site stealing customer data at that very moment, there are also priority reporting channels with domain registrars that can suspend the site in hours instead of weeks.
