Risks of Public Wi-Fi Networks and Bluetooth

Dangers of connecting in cafés, airports or via Bluetooth

Connecting to the free Wi-Fi at a café, airport or shopping mall is convenient, but those networks often lack proper encryption, which lets someone on the same network intercept traffic and capture passwords or data traveling unprotected. An additional risk is fake networks created by attackers with names similar to legitimate ones, such as Cafe_WiFi_Free, designed to get you to connect without suspecting anything while they record everything you do. Bluetooth, for its part, if left permanently on and visible, can allow a nearby device to try to pair without your knowledge or exploit protocol flaws to access the device. The practical recommendation is to avoid sensitive transactions, such as online banking, when on public Wi-Fi, to use a VPN if possible, and to turn off Bluetooth when you're not actively using it, instead of leaving it on all day for convenience.
