Prioritizing Investments Based on Risk

Investing where real risk drops the most

With a limited budget, prioritizing security investments according to the risk they actually reduce, and not according to technological novelty or a vendor's sales pressure, is what maximizes the real impact of cybersecurity spending. This means evaluating each candidate investment against the organization's current risk map, estimating how much it would reduce the likelihood or impact of the most severe risks, and comparing that expected reduction with the total cost of acquiring, implementing and maintaining the solution. In practice, it's common for organizations to invest disproportionately in detection technology that is visible and attractive to present to a committee, while neglecting less flashy controls with a greater real impact on risk reduction, such as basic patch management or privileged access control, which rarely generate the same enthusiasm but are usually the origin of most serious incidents.
