Designing the Cybersecurity Strategy

Aligning the Security Strategy with Business Objectives

Connecting security with the business strategy

A security strategy designed without an explicit connection to the organization's business objectives ends up competing for resources and attention instead of presenting itself as an enabler of those objectives, which makes it hard to obtain sustained support from leadership over time. Aligning both strategies means understanding where the business is heading, for example an expansion into new markets, the launch of a digital product or an acquisition, and designing security priorities around the specific risks and requirements those business moves create, instead of applying a generic security roadmap valid for any context. In practice, this alignment means actively participating in the business's strategic planning, not just receiving decisions already made, because incorporating security requirements from the design of a new business initiative is considerably cheaper and less disruptive than trying to add them after the project is already underway or even launched to market.
