Cybersecurity Governance Frameworks (COBIT, ISO 27014)
Reference frameworks for governing security
COBIT offers a comprehensive IT governance framework that includes security as one of its dimensions, connecting technology decisions with business objectives and defining governance processes separate from management processes, while ISO 27014 is designed specifically for information security governance, defining principles and processes that guide leadership on how to evaluate, direct and monitor the security program in a similar way to how it governs any other critical business function. Adopting one of these frameworks, or combining them, provides a common language and a proven structure that saves each organization from having to design its security governance processes from scratch. In practice, ISO 27014 is especially useful for organizations that already have an information security management system based on ISO 27001 and want to specifically strengthen the governance and executive oversight layer, which is often less developed than the management system's operational controls.
