Automating Compliance Control Monitoring

Verifying controls without relying on manual reviews

Manually verifying the status of dozens or hundreds of compliance controls, one by one and as often as a continuous program requires, is practically unfeasible at scale, so automating this monitoring with tools that directly query the actual configuration of systems, instead of relying on periodic surveys of owners, has become standard in mature programs. These tools can constantly verify whether, for example, encryption is still enabled on a database, whether multi-factor authentication is still active for all privileged users or whether critical patches were applied within the defined time frame, raising immediate alerts on any deviation instead of discovering it months later at the next audit. The important nuance is that automation covers technical controls verifiable through configuration well, but process or human behavior controls, such as the effective review of a report, still require complementary manual verification.
