Log Management and Event Traceability in the Cloud
Logging everything so you can investigate later
Without complete, centralized activity logs, investigating a security incident in the cloud becomes almost impossible, because the distributed, ephemeral nature of cloud resources means evidence can disappear within minutes if it wasn't logged; a compromised instance can be automatically deleted by a scaling policy before anyone examines it. Managing logs correctly means enabling audit logging on all relevant services from day one, sending logs to centralized storage protected against modification, and defining retention periods appropriate to the organization's regulatory obligations. This matters because logs don't only serve to investigate after an incident; they also make it possible to detect anomalous behavior as it happens. A practical example is discovering, by reviewing the audit log, that an account made hundreds of failed access attempts to different services within a few minutes, a clear pattern of automated reconnaissance by an attacker.
