Business Impact Analysis (BIA)

Methodology for Conducting a Business Impact Analysis

Practical steps for running a BIA

The Business Impact Analysis, or BIA, is the exercise that translates business processes into concrete risk data: how much each hour of disruption costs, what dependencies each process has on external vendors and internal systems, and what recovery time is really acceptable for the organization. A solid methodology combines structured questionnaires with interviews of each area's owners, validates the answers with historical data from previous incidents when available, and consolidates everything into a matrix that ranks processes by criticality. This matters because a poorly executed BIA, based on subjective perceptions without validation, produces a continuity plan built on the wrong priorities. A practical nuance is that the BIA must be repeated periodically; it's not a one-off exercise, because a process's criticality changes when the organization launches a new product or depends on a relevant new technology vendor.
