Identifying Critical Processes and Recovery Times
Prioritizing which processes to recover first
Not all of an organization's processes deserve the same level of continuity investment, which is why the first practical step is identifying which ones are truly critical: those whose disruption creates significant economic losses, legal non-compliance or serious reputational damage within a short time. This identification is done by interviewing the owners of each business process, not just the technology area, because those who best know the real impact of an outage are the ones who run the process day to day. From there, differentiated recovery times are assigned, avoiding the common mistake of treating all systems as equally urgent, which in practice ends up meaning none is recovered in time for lack of clear prioritization. A typical example is discovering that a system technology considered secondary turns out to be critical for meeting a daily regulatory obligation, and so must move up the recovery priority list.
