Updating Policies as the Business Evolves
Keeping policies aligned with the business
Security policies that worked for an organization of a certain size or business model usually become obsolete when the company changes scale, enters new markets or adopts new operating models, and an outdated policy creates two equally damaging problems: controls that no longer cover real risks, and rules the business ignores because it considers them irrelevant. Updating policies periodically, and not only after an incident, keeps them a credible reference for the organization. This requires a formal review process tied to relevant business milestones, not just a fixed annual calendar that may come too late. A clear example is a data classification policy written for a local business, which stops being enough as soon as the company starts operating under other countries' data protection regulations after an international expansion.
