Communicating Risk to Organizational Change Leaders
Translating technical risk into business decisions
Communicating cyber risk to those leading a change process requires translating technical findings into terms that affect business decisions (deadlines, costs, reputation), instead of reporting vulnerabilities on severity scales that only make sense to another security engineer. A transformation leader needs to know what concrete risk they take on by keeping an aggressive schedule, and what alternatives exist to mitigate it without stopping the project entirely. This matters because the lack of this translation is the most common reason security is left out of important decisions, not out of ill will but because the message never arrived in an actionable format. An effective example is presenting the risk as an estimated range of financial impact and an exposure period, instead of a list of technical findings with no associated business context.
