Types of Change: Mergers, Acquisitions, Restructurings
Overview of changes that impact security
Not all organizational changes expose the same type of risk, and distinguishing them is the first step in prioritizing security efforts. A merger usually involves connecting two networks with different maturity levels, an acquisition adds legacy assets and applications whose real patch status is unknown until audited, and an internal restructuring redistributes access and responsibilities in a way that can leave privileges without a clear owner. Classifying the type of change makes it possible to apply a specific risk checklist instead of a generic approach that ignores the particularities of each scenario. For example, in a small startup acquisition, the main risk is almost always shared credentials and unreviewed source code, while in a restructuring the focus should be on the timely revocation of access for relocated staff.
