The Role of Cybersecurity in Change Processes
Security's role as a partner in change
When cybersecurity only gets involved at the end of a change project, its role is reduced to signing off on a risk already taken on; when it participates from the start, it can influence architecture, contract and schedule decisions before they become costly to fix. The security team should act as a technical advisor within change committees, translating risk findings into terms the business understands, instead of blocking initiatives without offering viable alternatives. This requires a constant presence in change governance forums, not just one-off assessments. In practice, a well-integrated role shows when security proposes a phased migration path with compensating controls, instead of simply objecting to an aggressive deadline set by leadership to launch a new product.
