AppSec Program Maturity Metrics
Measuring the real progress of an AppSec program
Measuring the maturity of an AppSec program requires going beyond counting how many scanning tools are deployed, because having SAST, SCA and DAST installed doesn't guarantee the organization is really more secure if findings are never remediated; useful metrics focus on outcomes, not instrumentation. Indicators such as the average remediation time for critical vulnerabilities, the percentage of findings actually fixed versus those left accepted as risk indefinitely, or the trend of recurring vulnerabilities of the same type over time say much more about the program's health than the raw number of scans run. An especially revealing indicator is the proportion of vulnerabilities found in production versus those detected in early stages of the pipeline, because a mature program shifts that detection to the left of the development cycle, reducing the cost and risk of each fix. It's also worth measuring real adoption by development teams, such as the percentage of repositories with automated controls active and correctly configured, since a tool that's installed but ignored in practice provides no real risk reduction.
