Campaign Analysis and Threat Attribution

Connecting attacks and attributing their origin

Campaign analysis consists of identifying when multiple seemingly isolated incidents are actually part of the same coordinated operation, looking for similarities in the attacker's infrastructure, tools, targets or techniques over time. In practice, this connection makes it possible to anticipate the next step of an active campaign by observing how it evolved against other victims of the same group, something impossible to see if each incident is treated as a unique, disconnected event. Attribution, that is, identifying which specific actor or group is behind a campaign, is a much harder and less conclusive process than is usually presented publicly, because sophisticated attackers deliberately reuse other groups' tools or infrastructure to sow confusion and divert attribution toward a third party. The key nuance is that attribution should always be expressed with explicit confidence levels, avoiding categorical statements not backed by sufficiently solid evidence, since an incorrect attribution can have serious diplomatic or legal consequences.
